100% Gamay Noir – Morgon, Burgundy, France

Winemaker

Anthony Thévenet is a member of the new generation of vigneron defending the purity and legacy in Cru Beaujolais. In 2010, Thévenet inherited his grandfather’s vineyard in Villié-Morgon: a selection of vines ranging from 40-150 years old. The wines ferment in a mix of old wood and concrete tank, and—according to the vintage— the fruit goes through 10 to 25 days of carbonic maceration. They are always are made without correction, ferment with indigenous yeasts and without pump-overs, and are bottled unfined and unfiltered. This Morgon “Vielles Vignes” cuvee comes from two plots, one of 150-year-old gamay (pre-phylloxera) yielding about 10HL/ha and a second 80-year-old parcel.

Tasting Notes

Aromas: Crushed red and purple flowers, roly-poly raspberry fruits, melty graphite and pink spice.

Palate: Cranberries and Herbs. The wine delicately coats the palate with a creamy minerality of wet stone and tangy red earth. There’s solid tannin, hiding in the background, but you’ll have to pay attention to notice it.
